Minimum Balance Charges — Illegal or Disproportionate

Your bank has deducted minimum balance charges from your savings account, but the charges were levied without prior notice, are disproportionate to the shortfall, or pushed your account into a negative balance.

Applies to: All scheduled commercial banksDBOD.No.Leg.BC.21/09.07.006/2015-16 + RBI/2014-15/399

⚖️Your Rights Under RBI Regulations

Banks must give at least one month's prior written notice before changing minimum balance requirements.

Penalties must be proportional to the actual shortfall — not a flat fee regardless of how small the gap is.

Your account cannot go into negative balance solely because of bank fee deductions (RBI/2014-15/399).

Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA) have zero minimum balance requirement — every bank must offer this.

💰 What You Can Recover

Full refund of all unlawfully levied charges with interest from date of deduction. Up to Rs.1 lakh additional compensation for harassment and mental agony under RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2021.
